Teach Your Children to Swim

Teach Your Children to Swim

Several years ago I watch as a little girl who was barely two jumped into a pool and seemed to begin drowning in front of her mother who did nothing. As I started to say something, the little girl surfaced and dived back down.  I realized that this two year old was swimming underwater with ease. I had no idea this was possible.  My first thought was of my niece who drowned at 17 months old. I asked the mother how her daughter had learned to swim so young and very soon after my son was enrolled in lessons.

Diving for rings

Now, both of my children, ages 7 and 3, are swimmers. The picture above is of my daughter at age 2 diving to the bottom of a deep end to retrieve a ring. We don’t have a pool, but I know the risks water poses to children all too well. The lessons I put my children in were more expensive than the lessons at the local community pool, but the results were worth it to me. I advise parents to be sure their children learn to swim one way or another.

Even young children can learn to swim and survive in the pool.  Check out this short video of my daughter swimming and climbing out of the pool at the age of 20 months.

Now that my children know how to swim, they continue to take lessons to help them refine their skills. Here is another short video of my daughter swimming freestyle at the age of 2 1/2.

We love to swim around here.  The desert heat requires it. Wherever you live I am sure you know how much children love water. Please teach your children to swim and watch them around water.

Have you taught your children to swim?  How did you do it? Feel free to leave comments. Share and let’s talk about it.

In memory of my niece Dominique who would have been graduating high school this year. We love and miss you sweetie.

I like this post. Even if YOU don't like the water, kids are so attracted to it. You can't turn your head for 1 second. I had a huge built in pool when my kids were little tots. One day, sitting around the pool, I was holding 6-week old Nicole, while almost 2 yr. old Robin decided to jump in the deep end. Luckily both me and my sister saw her (just 1 split second) and Karla dove in after her. Can you say heart attack? Shortly thereafter, we moved to Pismo Beach. I was paranoid living next to the ocean. Got them both swimming lessons right away. Robin was a champ, and little Nicole loved the water and tried her darnedest to keep up with her sister. In fact, Nicole used to boogie board in the winter w no wetsuit! (that's probably borderline bad parenting, but she'd zoom in the motorhome, dry off, and go out again). Even if you don't live near water, I think every kid should learn to swim.

  2. Scary stuff. My little sis Christine also had a close call when she was about 4. She is a walking miracle. I think one of the most dangerous things about this is that so many think it will never happen to them and they let their guard down.

Hi, I am a new follower to yor wonderful blog via hop!

First, let me say sorry for the untimely loss of your niece. I can't even imagine. THat is exactly my worst fear with my girls. We live in FL and pools are everywhere. WE began swim lessons last summer and it is something I feel very strongly about.

Kids are curious and daring and we need to be sure they are educated!

Hope to see you in our lil slice of the bloggy world,

I'm a new follower from the Monday Mingle. I am not a strong swimmer so I have left the teaching up to my husband. Although I plan on getting our 2 year old in lessons this year because my husband will be gone until next spring.
Hope you get a chance to stop by my page.

  8. My boys are 3&5 and do not know how to swim yet. We've taken them to the pool a number of times but I don't even know where to begin to teach them. I'm constantly saying to my husband that they need to learn how to swim!! I'm so worried when they are around water!

I remember being thrown in the water and it was sink of swim! It taught us how to swim. Ruby cube is a little fish in the water. The second video looks like it is from the 70's and your jumping off the diving board. Have fun swimming.
